Greetings everyone! It's time for the annual July Birthday update! Yes, every year instead of raking in the cash & prizes it seems I give back to the people who support the website by adding another update to the system. This update has photos from several contributors, as well as over 130 photos from a trip I took to South Texas in February of 2007. So for everyone who sends in photos and they take awhile to get up, don't feel bad, I'm over 2 years behind on my own photos ;)

Well folks we have creaked across yet another impressive milestone this evening. Within this update the photo content of the website exceeds 25,000 photos! I've been working odd hours, am half asleep, and I can't think of much more to say here other than THANK YOU to everyone who's helped make that number possible. We also crossed over the 6,500 agency mark as well. Heading into summer, time for those roadtrips! I will be doing a little cross-state searching this weekend myself in the Reading, PA area, finally nice weather and long daylight hours here in the Commonwealth.

Hope everyone is enjoying the un-official start of summer. Also hope everyone took time today to remember those who gave their lives for this country so you could enjoy this long weekend. Thanks to all those who visit this site who have served or are serving the United States.
My long weekend has allowed me to get another update up for everyone. We took about 200 photos down in D.C. this year, that's about 1/2 of the normal amount. The impacts to municipal budgets was very evident.

11:21 pm - A Vermonting We Will Go!
Hello everyone and welcome to Pre-D.C. Week Update. That's right time has flown around the calender nearly 365 days and it's almost time to head back down to our nation's capitol for National Police Week. We'll be down for a customary week, although a business week rather than a full week this year. Economy being what it is, I couldn't get a 9 day break this year, only 6, so we'll miss the Law Ride, but be there for everything else. The missing 2 days is only really going to effect our ability to work outside of D.C. events in Maryland & Virginia, and I'm still working on what things would have priority.
This update is a big dose of maple-ly goodness in the form of Vermont. 17 new agencies from the Green Mountain State, as well as some other stuff spread around to keep the flow of photos going along.

Hey everyone, this is the first update in an experiment to make the size of the update smaller, and therefore more often. The problem lies in uploading the photos to our server and then making sure the "slot" they are saved in is stable and can be linked onto the site without the photo disappearing. Of course all of this can be undone by my sloth ;)
We attended the public memorial in Pittsburgh last week for the three officers we lost. I say we, because I am a resident of SW PA, and these senseless killing really hit home that this type of tragedy really can happen anywhere. I took over 700 photos prior to attending the services, and this was by far the largest funeral I have ever seen/photographed. Excellent job by the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police & Philadelphia who organized and pulled off this event in a crowded downtown area as smoothly as could be expected. The support from law enforcement was overwhelming, and I am proud of my fellow "public" citizens who came out 3-4 deep in some places to see the procession.

10:25 pm - Overdue Update...Coming Thru!!
Greetings from the 6th Anniversary of the National Police Car Archives! Time flies when you're having fun, and it's hard for me to believe that another year has come and gone. Once again thanks go out to everyone who both contribute photos, and just visit the site for making us the most successful, most visited Law Enforcement Vehicle website around.
In just the last few days I have noted that we are now a reference source for several Wikipedia pages, as well as being the #2 result on Google for "police car". Can't be those kind of examples of growth!
As we go through our 6th year I would like to remind everyone, yet again, that we don't accept photographs from "internet sources". This is the easiest hobby in the world, all it requires is a camera, a mode of transportation, and the ability to ask a police officer if you can take a photograph of a police vehicle. It's not hard, it's not illegal, it's not rocket science, it's also not a hobby for the lazy...nor will you be recognized here for you laziness. Especially when you send me photographs THAT I TOOK MYSELF! *cough*
I'm not going to turn this into a pity-party for me, as I enjoy providing this forum for research, development and enjoyment for both the public and law enforcement. But I am well aware of how much I spent last weekend to spend three days in NW Virginia photographing dozens of agencies across VA & WV. I can extrapolate that to all the Senior Contributors here who go beyond their local cities & counties and travel their states and regions to provide subject matter for this site. It isn't cheap, and it severely turns people off to this hobby when you take their hard work, steal it, and then submit it as your own. There are only so many people out there who are "true" photographers of Law Enforcement Vehicles, you can either become one of us, or take from us. Ask yourself which side of that ledger you'd prefer to be on if you were in our shoes.
On a more positive note, we will again see expansive growth in Year 6. Gas prices have come down substantially from last summer, however the economy is probably keeping more people at home than it did last year from an employment/spending angle. We will be back in D.C. again in 2009, but I don't know what the summer/fall will hold in regards to shows/events we will attend. Our backlog of photos is still as strong as ever. I personally have over 1,000 photos I need to add to the site.
Finally our prayers again go out to the men, women, friends & family of those fine officers at the Oakland, California Police Department who lost their lives this weekend.

Happy Holidays to everyone out there. I know I missed a rare Christmas update for everyone, usually that is my gift to all of you out there. But it was a hectic month at work (which is a good thing), combined with a massive update and it just couldn't get done in time. But fear not we are still here and kicking! So this turned into the first update of 2009, it is over 400 photos and adds 48 new departments. I already have over 300 photos on deck to be edited for the next update...it never ends...not that I'm complaining.
Our recent updates have taken the site over the 35% coverage mark. For those of you who have recently found our site, this means we have photographs of more than 35% of all law enforcement agencies within the United States. We recently relocated our HQ (which is another excuse for a delay in the update) so our address has been updated to reflect our new PO Box if you need to get things to us via the USPS. Hello everyone. In this update I have finally added the photos from National Police Week of 2007. I know!! I'm that far behind in my own photos too. 2008 somehow made the site right of way this summer, but 2007 has been languishing all this time. I was past this on the contributed photos, and felt it was only fair to catch my own photos up to date a little bit.
We're sending out our condolences today to the friends, family and co-workers of South Strabane Township Police Officer Nathaniel Burnfield was who struck and killed in a tragic accident on Tuesday. He was returning from a training session at a local college when he and two fellow officers came acros road debris that had already damaged a vehicle and had stopped traffic. As Officer Burnfield removed the debris and attempted to return to his police vehicle he was struck by a dumptruck that had swerved onto the shoulder to avoid stopped traffic. The driver of the dumptruck was also killed after his vehicle struck the rear of a parked tractor trailer that had been damaged by the road debris. Office Burnfield was also a part-time officer with the Borough of East Washington, as well as a Lieutenant with the Canton Township Volunteer Fire Department. The memorial services will be held Monday (11/10) at 0930 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Washington, PA. We in the Western side of Pennsylvania have been very fortunate to not have any Line of Duty Deaths recently, Officer Burnfield is the first officer lost in the history of South Strabane Township.
We'll get back to contributed photos in the next update to start thinning that mailbox out again. Hope everyone enjoys this batch, I am on vacation this week. Between the memorial services and a planned 3 day trip to Central PA this coming week I will be loaded back down with photographs by next weekend.

Just wanted to post a quick message to everyone thanking them for their dedication to the website. From our staff, to our contributors, and especially to those of you who visit the site. We keep track of our traffic, but rather than for advertising, I look at it from a personal pride prospective.
When I say we are the #1 Source of Law Enforcement Vehicle Photography, I want everyone to know that isn't just me tooting our horn, it is fact. We use the same traffic tracking company that Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft and others use to track their traffic and we can back up our claim.
So thanks to everyone who stops by, we get 1-2k people a month more than the other two major police car websites, and you've all pushed us well into the top 250,000 websites on the internet. Not just the PA, or the US, but the world. When I started this website 5 1/2 years ago if you would have told me we would be more popular than Ryan Seacrest's Official Website (the host of American Idol) I think I woulda laughed at you, to be in the top .003% of the entire internet...well I think I would have thrown you out of my house.

After a few weeks of laptop problems (looks like it might be time to consider a replacement), going everywhere in the US that doesn't have an internet connection and other excuses you really don't care about, I present an update! Unless you're in a state I didn't update, then you're probably all "He never adds photos from around me"...think about that, and then go use your camera.

Greetings everyone. The dog days of summer are about to be upon us, or already are (it's 101 in Arkansas today). So crank up the A/C and enjoy over 300 new photos, from 73 new departments. I want to thank everyone for their support regarding the recent post I made in regards to photo ownership. It's mere 26 days till college football starts, and even less time till pre-season in the NFL. The Cleveland Indians fell asleep at the wheel this year, so it's back to rooting for Ohio State and the Steelers.
Right now I am kicking around an idea for a first ever National Police Car Archive Design Choice Award. Being it's football season, and there are 31 cities represented (I'm unsure what to do with this as both the Jets & Giants play in East Rutherford, NJ). The competition would be a vote open to all visitors to the website, and be loosely based on the schedules of the cities involved. I'm still working on the details, and on a larger scale I would like to do this with colleges involved in their fall and spring sports programs (Police Car Design Bracket in March anyone?) but we need a lot more departments to be represented from the major conferences first from the Midwest and West Coast.

I don't mean the NFL team from Pittsburgh either. No this is a posting that I hope will discourage the recent rash of borrowing of photos that I have been encountering in the past six months. I recently opened an account on Flickr that I use to back up my own personal photos. Contributors need not worry as your photos are backed up to external HDD and never reposted by our staff.
I began to notice as I posted photos to Flickr, they began to wander off. Also it gave me the opportunity to notice how many of our photos had wandered off the NPCA site and onto various people's Flickr accounts.
Perhaps you belong to the camp that see these types of activities as borrowing, or "collecting". Folks it is not, it is stealing. From me, from other photographers, from the Police Car Site, I don't care where you take them from, the key is your taking them.
Police Car Photo Collecting is one of the easiest hobbies to be involved with, you merely need three things...
1) A Camera
2) A Vehicle or other means of conveyance
3) The ability to get off your lazy ass and down to your local city hall
It would probably be good for you not to have a warrant out for your arrest, or be "one of those guys" to your police either. But there is no good excuse to take photos from other people and claim them to be of your doing. We don't want photos you "came across", "found on the internet", "had sent to you", "saw on another site and figured we'd like them too", "are from the police department's website" or any of the other countless similiar sob stories about your laziness and inability to stop stealing from the internet and take your own photos.
Photographs are copyrighted pieces of property of the originating photographer. We use other people's photos by specific permission. It doesn't give any visitor to this site the right to take them and use them somewhere else because "they're on the internet". This isn't the Wild Wild West and I have no clue why you want to aggravate the supporters of this website the great many of which are actively involved in and/or retired from the emergency services of this country
With gas prices smacking into (and in some states through) the $4/gal level it costs about $12 an hour to operate the average car. Take into effect the cost of a photographer's time, mine is $32/per hour and you're just robbing people of the credit the deserve for their work. I spend 6 to 8 hours a day when I am out pursuing vehicles in Pennsylvania and the tri-state area.
If you haven't caught the drift yet I don't take kindly to people taking our stuff. I also dimly view those visitors to this site who take things and send them into us. So as the FAQ states we do not post stolen photos. Anyone sending in stolen photos will be subsequently banned from submitting photos in the future.
We are all adults here, this isn't a subject for debate, discussion or a vote. I am a police car nut. I can't get enough, so I am constantly searching through sites, Flickr, Fotki, Photobucket and the like for new and interesting things. You will get caught, you will be banned. No one (myself included) is reimbursed for their efforts in making this site what it is today. The average age of a user here is 31-39, we shouldn't even be having this discussion.

Greetings everyone...In this update we are adding all of the photos from our week-long trip to Washington D.C. In doing this we got several thing accomplished.
1) Maryland now needs around 30 departments to be finished.
2) We move over the 6,000 agency mark
3) We add another checkmark to the system.
We finally tracked down a vehicle from the University of D.C. and this completes the District of Columbia. Which granted isn't really a state, but is more than a city and all that, but it is another section of the website that is done. On our 2009 plans we will focus more on working outwards from D.C. Hope you enjoy the photos!

We keep on clicking the counter higher and higher. While there were only (only) 240 photos in this update, what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in added departments with 70 new agencies. I am about 1/2 way through the photos from this year's Police Week and have another set of contributor photos in the editing process, so it will be a race between those two to see which one gets posted first.
In the missing agencies arena, some may have not noticed that last update we added Tennessee, in this update I added South Carolina. What I am noticing is a lot of neglecting of colleges. If in doubt most state college & universities have their own police departments, as do a substantial number of private institutions depending on the state. Quickest way to find this out is to go to the school's website and do a search for "POLICE" or "PUBLIC SAFETY" (there are some that still consider themselves Campus Safety or Security) and you'll be on your way to making sure you don't leave these important agencies off your photo field trips.

Another massive update for everyone today. Nearly 400 photos, and 101 new departments. The majority in New Hampshire and North Dakota. This update takes us over 33% complete, which is to say we now cover 1/3rd of the United States! We've returned from National Police Week with around 300 photos. Did some side work while we were in the neighborhood that completes a Virginia County, a Virginia Independent City, and 3 Maryland Counties. This update includes all photos sent in to us for June of 2007.
Thanks to those of you who sent well wishes for the passing of my grandmother last week. Also a Happy Birthday to my mom today, who I will not reveal her age aside to say it's all downhill to retirement from here ;)
